Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of trends and the identification of opportunities for the involvement of population in volunteering in Ukraine in the context of gender roles and stereotypes. The authors proposed to introduce the concept of volunteering motivation into scientific circulation and  to interpret this category as a process of encouraging individuals and legal entities to provide voluntary, selfless, socially oriented, organizational and other help to persons who need it. One of the primary tasks in the study of gender aspects of volunteering motivation is to find out possible motives that contribute to the involvement of representatives of both sexes in this important social activity. The main gender stereotypes of the population regarding the implementation of such a form of unpaid work as volunteering are identified on the basis of the sociological survey conducted by the authors. As a result of the analysis of the answers of 258 respondents to the questions of the questionnaire in Google forms, we found out that representatives of both sexes are almost equally favourable to volunteering and have experience of participating in various projects as volunteers. At the same time, the study revealed a much greater inclination of women to work of a social orientation, including support of the disadvantaged population, helping animals, which can perceived as a manifestation of gender segregation in volunteering. Areas in which women are much more active, while men pay comparatively little attention to them, have formed absolutely clearly. The main stimulus for representatives of both sexes are the desire to help those in need, and the acquisition of useful social and practical skills. Women also preferred such incentives as the possibility of  specialized training and international exchange programs. More than a third of the interviewed men are interested in material stimulation. Practical recommendations for motivating the population's involvement in  volunteer activities, taking into account gender differences in the perception of this type of social activity, are offered.
