Abstract

The article examines the evolution of scientific views on economic resilience in the context of the sustainable development paradigm. It is established that the category of resilience has an interdisciplinary origin, having emerged within ecological systems theory before being transformed into an independent field of economic inquiry. Three consecutive stages in the evolution of scholarly thought are identified: the engineering approach (resilience as a return to a prior equilibrium), the ecological approach (adaptive capacity through system reorganization), and the socio-economic (agency-transformational) approach, which emphasizes the strategic choices of economic actors. The theoretical approaches of foreign and Ukrainian researchers are systematized, revealing divergent trajectories of discourse formation: while foreign theory evolved gradually over several decades, Ukrainian discourse developed rapidly under the influence of the wartime shocks of 2022–2025. At the same time, both discourses demonstrate a meaningful convergence in terms of recognizing the multilevel (macro-, regional, institutional) and multidimensionality of the category. The dual nature of the relationship between resilience and sustainable development is substantiated: resilience constitutes a necessary but not sufficient condition for achieving sustainable development, while the sustainable development paradigm itself provides the normative benchmark against which the transformational potential of resilience is assessed. Promising directions for further research related to the post-war transformation of Ukraine's economy are outlined. It is proposed to understand economic resilience in the context of the sustainable development paradigm as the ability of an economic system not only to resist the action of destabilizing factors and restore functionality after their action, but also to transform its own structure and institutional configuration in such a way as to preserve or strengthen the ability to implement a long-term development trajectory compatible with the goals of intergenerational sustainability. This definition integrates the key theoretical achievements of the considered approaches and can serve as a working definition for further applied research into the resilience of the national economy of Ukraine.
