The results of studies of physiological reactions and detoxification properties of higher aquatic plants used in phytoremediation technologies are presented. It has been revealed that Elodeya Canadensisis a promising species of plants for phytoremediation in the Western Polissya of Ukraine. An optimal macrophyte biomass of about 0.5 kg/m3 has been installed to ensure removal of contaminated surface water up to 35% copper, up to 40% zinc and up to 60% iron. It is envisaged that the photosynthetic apparatus of plants will saturate the water with oxygen and promote self-purification of surface water from organic pollution. It is suggested to use E. canadensis on riverbeds and floodplains of small rivers in the region.
