Abstract

The author highlights the problems of the modern stage of development of soil science. The author gives the formulation of current scientific problems and tasks of modern soil science, waiting to be solved. The historical stages of soil science development are characterized. The main dilemmas of modern soil science are updated. The normative-methodical problems of soil science are described. The author singles out the problems of space soil science. The review of the problems of modern soil science has clearly demonstrated that scientists are currently facing a number of unresolved problems, without which the rapid development of the direction of engineering geology studied by the author is impossible. Current scientific problems and problems waiting to be solved are formulated. The historical stages of Soil Science development are described. Actual problems of modern soil science are studied. In engineering and geological terms, many soils of the Earth’s Oceanic and marine basins, including the shelf zones of Ukraine, are poorly or not studied at all.  Along with the diversity of soils, there is another equally important scientific problem of Soil Science — the problem of forming their properties. An important distinguishing feature of the development of modern soil science is its orientation not only to solving purely engineering and geological problems, but also to solving geoecological or, more precisely, ecological and geological problems. Soil is one of the components of biogeocenoses or ecosystems, an important part of ecological and geological systems. In this regard, soil science is faced with the problem of ecological and geological assessment of the role of certain soils in the formation of ecological and geological conditions of territories, the role of soils in the state of ecological and geological systems, and so on. Normative and methodological problems of soil science are characterized. The author highlights the problems of space soil science. The review of the problems of modern soil science shows that scientists face important and difficult problems, without solving which it is impossible to further develop this basic direction of Engineering Geology.
